Astoldir
Guardian of the boundary of death
Astoldir is an angel charged with protecting the final separation between the living and the dead. He does not command death and cannot decide when a life should end. His duty begins afterward: to keep memory with the living, the dead at rest and outside powers from turning bodies into tools.
For most of history his work was quiet. He advised burial keepers, marked unsafe battlefields and closed the spiritual wounds left by demonic violence.
Teacher during the War of the Undead
When Archdemon Kraytor bound the unburied dead of Ferador’s northern front, Astoldir refused to destroy them as a single mass. He studied the marks controlling each group and taught mortal wardens how to break those bindings without strengthening the Archdemon.
This knowledge turned the War of the Undead. Ferador and Vanyr could dismantle the army in sections, recover their fallen and deny Kraytor the constant supply of bodies on which his strategy depended.
The law of burial
Astoldir helped the kingdoms translate a wartime necessity into protected burial grounds and battlefield recovery customs. He insisted the rules apply to enemies as well as allies, because an abandoned enemy body was no less vulnerable to binding.
He remains respected by soldiers who do not otherwise trust celestial influence. His promise is modest but absolute: no one should be forced to fight after their life has ended.
