Aidian
The herald who surrendered authority
Aidian is the angel chosen to carry Eldiar’s decree that no celestial being may hold a mortal throne. The appointment was deliberate. Aidian was a respected commander among the early settlements and could easily have become their permanent ruler.
By delivering the decree publicly and surrendering his own authority first, he proved that the law constrained angels rather than merely granting mortals a lesser form of rule.
The First Crown
Aidian travelled to the largest river settlement and presented its elected war leader with the duties attached to the First Crown. He did not choose her, give her land or claim that Eldiar guaranteed her descendants. The settlement had already trusted her; the crown made that trust accountable to law.
He remained long enough to establish the first separation between celestial counsel and royal command, then withdrew from the court.
Herald of disputed rulers
Later traditions claim Aidian appears whenever a ruler is legitimate, but the historical record is less convenient. He does not certify bloodlines or settle elections. His rare appearances remind rulers of the original standard: a crown is a duty to protect people, land and law.
Aidian therefore belongs to no kingdom. He is invoked during coronations, yet his message is often most uncomfortable for the person being crowned.
